Ever painted on water? That's basically what Ebru is. You drop colors onto a water surface, swirl them into patterns, and then press a tote bag onto the water to transfer the design. The result is a completely one-of-a-kind print. No two are ever the same.
This is a 2-hour hands-on workshop. Our instructor will walk you through the whole process: how to prepare the water, how to use the traditional tools (brushes, combs, stylus), and how to layer colors to get the patterns you want. You'll practice on paper first, then do the real thing on your tote bag.
You'll also create 2 Ebru marbled postcards. Keep them as souvenirs or write a message on the back and we'll mail them anywhere in the world for you. Imagine someone back home opening their mailbox to find a handmade postcard from Istanbul.
You don't need to be an artist. Most of our guests have never done anything like this before, and the results always look incredible. That's the beauty of Ebru. The water does half the work.
While your tote bag dries, sit back with some Turkish tea and our homemade cookies. Our instructors love chatting about Istanbul: where to eat, what to see, the places tourists usually miss.
You leave with a tote bag you can actually use. It's not a souvenir that sits on a shelf. It's something you'll carry around and people will ask you about. Ebru is on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and now you've got a piece of it in your hands.
